Having worked briefly for a recruitment company, which focused on pharmaceutical and medical device companies, this sparked an interest to find an opportunity in the healthcare industry. This led me to Rayner.

Tell me what your role involves?

• Project Manager for innovative projects within the company’s new product development program.
• Planning and carrying out research to demonstrate and promote suitable technology for future product development programs and manufacturing improvement projects.
• Acting as Material Team SME to provide support to the business and other departments (RA, QA, Ops) to meet the requirements of relevant ISO standards and MDR for medical implants.
• Designing, planning, and documenting controlled experiments and trials, analysing and interpreting chemical and technical data.
• Utilising Root Cause Analysis methods to problem solve process issues.

What is a typical day like?

The combination of the following:

• Gathering requirements, deliverables, and timeframes from project stakeholders.
• Presenting project progress to senior management and agreeing on priorities with the business.
• Aligning project team resources, creating project plans and communicating key milestones.
• Communicating frequently with project sponsors, suppliers and project teams SMEs.
• Ensuring adherence to the project critical path and having a plan to mitigate risks and issues that inevitably arise
• Supporting the company’s in-house material testing, biocompatibility and cytotoxicity testing, medical device development, microscopy, risk assessments and data analysis.
• Utilising my expertise in analytical characterisation technique (GC/MS, HPLC, FTIR, EDX, UV-Vis, Microscopy technique SEM, TEM, AFM), 3D Printing and Laser application.
• Conducting laboratory testing to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in manufacturing and writing up results in the form of reports, manuscripts, proposals, and technical documents.
• Developing and qualifying analytical methods for testing of raw materials and intraocular lenses to ensure manufacturing quality and safety standards are met.

What did you do before you came here?

• Before joining Rayner, I was a PhD Researcher working on an advanced/novel biomedical engineering project; 3D printing (additive manufacturing) application for biosensor devices.
• I joined with seven years of laboratory research project experience concentrated in scientific fields, with high exposure to engineering/industry.
• In addition to above, I was a managing director of two franchises (hairdressing industry) based in Gloucester and Newport for four years, with 18 employees.

Tell me something interesting about yourself

When I am under too much stress or feel down, I play the violin and once I am happy, I play the piano. This helps people who know me to understand how I’m feeling on a daily basis and to give me space to relax when required without even needing to talk to me.

Tell me what your role involves?

I manage several production areas, helping to lead our teams of Technicians to deliver against Key Performance Indicators of Safety, Quality, Productivity and Customer Service.

What is a typical day like?

A typical day will begin with review of the previous day’s activities, a reference to a “to do” list and a quick re-evaluation of priorities. I lead a Tier 2 review meeting of area supervisors and after that like to try and walk around the different production areas. The rest of my day will be extremely varied. I get involved with some strategic projects, with personnel planning, apprenticeship training, coaching and performance management. I have Quality management responsibilities for reviewing validation protocols and reports, non-conformance reports, SOP revisions, Change requests and Customer complaints (a very rare occurrence!)

What attracted you to Rayner?

I was attracted to Rayner first by the impressive building as I watched its construction, while working just over the fence at GSK. Other things that attracted me were the company’s record of growth and future growth ambitions, the knowledge that Rayner make products that have real life-changing benefits for our older communities and by the team of dynamic people I met at interview.

What do you enjoy about working at Rayner?

The thing I enjoy most is being part of an energised team that really works well together. It’s a team sport where I firmly believe that our diversity gives us a competitive edge. Part of my role is to inspire others, but quite often it is the others who inspire me.

What did you do before you came here?

Before I worked for Rayner, I worked for many other manufacturing companies, mostly in Production Management roles. I have produced hundreds of products including Mr. Muscle, Mum roll-on, Estee Lauder, Clairol, Boots and Body Shop cosmetics, multi-vitamins, and many prescription/OTC medicines, but never Medical Devices before. I like to walk around shops and say to myself “made that”.

Rachel Yin

International Business Manager (APAC)

Tell me what your role involves:

Overall responsibility of Asian Pacific distributors which includes distributor appointments, working with our Regulatory Affairs team to receive the regulatory approvals of our products in each country, revenue budgeting, sales monitoring, working with Sam Carter, our APAC Product Specialist as well as our Marketing Team for product launch and distributor training, working with our Customer Service Team for daily distributor supports and order processing.

What is a typical day like?

Prior Covid, majority of my time were spent abroad for visiting distributors/hospitals or attending local/international conferences.  For visiting distributor, a day would involve a business review meeting at distributor’s office and field visit to the hospitals which allows me to introduce our new products to the surgeons and obtain their feedbacks on our existing products.  If attend conference, a day would spend on our booth for the demonstration of our products, meetings with our business partners and KOLs.  In the evening of the conference, typically we will hold symposiums or seminars.

What attracted you to Rayner?

Rayner offered my first job after my graduation 21 years ago.  What attracted me the most is people I work with, the power of Rayner brand and its state-of-the art products and technology.

What do you enjoy about working at Rayner?

Travelling, meeting new customers, new business partners, identifying new business opportunities, gaining industry knowledge and build up industry network day by day.

What did you do before joining Rayner?

Rayner offered my first job after my university graduation and I stayed for 9 years.  Then I left Rayner for 5 years working for a competitor company.  I later returned in 2015 and have been here ever since!

Tell me something interesting about yourself. 

I am obsessed with body pump and body combat.  I also like English costume drama and dream I can speak the English accent as such.  But my Chinese accent will stay forever with me, which I don’t mind.
