Rayner doubles IOL manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand

Posted on 2/04/2025

02 April 2025 | In response to demand growth, Rayner – a global leader in solutions for cataract surgery – has completed an extensive expansion of its Worthing (UK) production facility, doubling the number of intraocular lenses (IOLs) it can manufacture annually to 4 million.

Since opening its purpose-built manufacturing facility in 2017, every Rayner IOL has been produced in Worthing – including over six million RayOne fully preloaded systems. The RayOne family features the pioneering EMV lens platform, and now the Galaxy and Galaxy Toric, Rayner’s fastest-growing lenses since the world’s first IOL back in 1949.

Playing a lead role in the futureproofing of Rayner’s facility, Tom Heron, Head of Manufacturing, said ““We are thrilled to have completed our latest factory expansion. This development enables us to uphold our rigorous quality control standards as we continue to grow—including four meticulous inspections of every single IOL. Combined with the opening of our new global warehouse near Gatwick Airport in 2024, this expansion reinforces our commitment to an uninterrupted supply for customers worldwide.”

David Forsythe, Rayner Chief Operating Officer, commented “Our teams have worked incredibly hard to bring this ambitious expansion to life, which included the installation of an additional autoclave, automation and investing in new energy efficient plant equipment. I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts. As the only British manufacturer of IOLs, we take immense pride in our precise and increasingly sustainable lens production process—and in regularly welcoming surgeons to witness it firsthand.”
