Midland Eye becomes first global customer of Sophi following Rayner acquisition

Posted on 13/12/2024

Midland Eye, a private ophthalmology clinic based in Solihull, UK, were proud to become the first customer globally to receive the Sophi Phaco-emulsification machine following its acquisition by Rayner earlier this year.

Worthing-based Rayner, a global manufacturer of products for cataract surgery, acquired Swiss-based This AG, the developer and manufacturer of Sophi, in January 2024. Sophi (Swiss Ophthalmology Innovation) is an innovative and disruptive phaco technology providing mobility, simplicity, and safety within the operating theatre. With advanced features including triple pump fluidics, active IOP control, clean multi-use cassette, cable free operation and WiFi connection, Sophi presents a truly advanced surgical system.

Delivery of the first Sophi sold under Rayner to Midland Eye marked a milestone moment both for Rayner and for Midland Eye as it strives to provide improved patient outcomes through continued innovation.

Anne Sharkey, Head of Operations at Midland Eye, said: “We are very proud to be the first global customers of Sophi under Rayner. Making use of the latest technologies is a priority for us so that we can ensure we provide patients with the very best care. We’re grateful to have the continued support of the Rayner team as we move forward with Sophi.”

Professor Sunil Shah, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Midland Eye, said: “Using the Sophi phaco machine in theatre here at Midland Eye has been excellent. The team adjusted to the new technology very quickly and we are particularly impressed with the improved sustainability of Sophi compared to other devices – we can now operate on 10 patients without the need to change the cassette, which is fantastic.”

Iain Reid, Rayner VP Europe, echoed “We’re thrilled to see Sophi joining the team at Midland Eye to provide advanced phaco technology for both the surgical team and their patients. It’s wonderful to be able to work with and support Midland Eye in utilising Sophi and making complete use of its capabilities. I look forward to seeing the outcomes Midland Eye and its patients have going forward.”
