Tim Clover
CEO
Tim has spent 30 years in the international ophthalmic business with experience in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, services, digital healthcare and private equity.
Following an earlier career at Zeiss and Allergan/AMO, Tim was CEO of Moonray Healthcare, a proprietary capital fund at Fidelity, investing in medical technology and healthcare services.
Tim was appointed to the Rayner board in 2014 to lead a strategic expansion plan. He successfully led an MBO by Phoenix Equity Partners in 2017 and an SBO by CVC Capital Partners in 2021. During his tenure, Rayner has pursued a growth strategy based on innovation, expansion of its international direct footprint and concluded several acquisitions to expand and diversify the company into a global leader in eye care.
After years of rugby and Ironman triathlons, Tim’s knees now limit his passion to K1 kayak racing, which he enjoys most weekends.
David Forsythe
COO
David joined Rayner in August 2017. David has spent over 30 years working in the Medical Device market and brings to Rayner extensive knowledge of Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing, and Distributing medical devices.
David has had over 5 years’ experience on Stryker’s European leadership team with responsibility for Operations, and RA/QA. During this time the European leadership team transformed the business, significantly improving sales and operational performance.
One significant achievement was the restructure of the operations team which through improved supply chain processes significantly improved service levels to customers, while reducing the inventory.
David is a very keen golfer and runner in his spare time.
Cary Dawes
Vice President - International
Cary was appointed to the Board in 2005. He subsequently joined our intraocular lens business in 2007, initially as UK Commercial Director where he achieved year-on-year double-digit growth. Cary is currently VP International.
Prior to joining Rayner, Cary enjoyed a career in banking and his last role was as Sales Director for Barclays Premier banking.
Cary’s great grandfather was Jean-Baptiste Reiner, one of the two original founders of Rayner in 1910 and accordingly Cary has a very particular connection with the Rayner business.
Cary is married to Laura, has 3 children (including a set of twins) and a dog, Honey.
Rob Nadler
Chief Growth Officer
Rob joined Rayner in November 2021. Rob has spent 18 years working in the finance industry and ophthalmology clinical practice.
Rob spent over a decade advising healthcare companies on strategic and financial matters. He was previously at William Blair where he was the Head of Medtech in Europe. Prior to William Blair, Rob was a member of the Global Healthcare M&A teams at Perella Weinberg Partners, Nomura and commenced his banking career at Lehman Brothers. He holds a medical and science degree from Imperial College and trained as an ophthalmic surgeon practising in the UK.
Rob is a keen tennis player and between matches likes spending time with his young children.
Chris Willis
Chief Marketing Officer
Chris joined Rayner in February 2021 as Vice President of Marketing, responsible for the groups marketing and clinical departments globally.
Since graduating Chris has spent over 20 years working in the medical device industry, with the last 15 years in global ophthalmology. Chris’s marketing career started at 3M Health Care, spending 5 valuable years in their UK medical markets division, followed by 5 years with Bausch & Lomb surgical, where Chris was responsible for marketing across EMEA before being relocated to the Bausch Surgical’s global headquarters in Southern California to introduce the MICS Platform and head up global marketing. Since his time in the US, Chris has led the global commercialisation of new and innovative technology such as the KAMRA inlay and IC-8 IOL from AcuFocus, led a turnaround for Optos (Nikon Medical) in the UK and Nordics and launched the EyeMax Mono IOL on behalf of Syneos Health Commercial Solutions.
While not living medical devices, Chris enjoys spending time with his young family, being outdoors and both watching and playing sport as often as possible.
James Crutchlow
Chief Commercial Officer
James joined Rayner in 2008 from Pfizer where he specialised in pharmaceutical sales. In addition to the UK sales organisation, James is responsible for Rayner’s wholly owned subsidiary companies across Europe.
In December 2019, James relocated back to the UK from New York where he spent two years overseeing the establishment of our direct US presence Rayner Surgical Inc. James is well versed in similar projects having led on Rayner’s direct entry into Iberia, Italy and Switzerland, and as recently as 2022, Poland and France. James has several years’ life sciences experience, 15 of which have been at Rayner and now as VP – Europe, will lead commercial execution, launching our pipeline of products and in expanding our direct presence to new markets.
He is a Business Postgraduate from the University of Warwick and holds a BA (Hons) degree from the University of Central Lancashire. As a senior member of Rayner’s commercial team, James can be relied on to deliver the objectives set for growth in Europe’s largest IOL markets.
James is a keen runner and enjoys spending his spare time exploring the many trails in Surrey.
Nat Davies
R&D Director
Nat joined Rayner in 2004 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, initially gaining experience across a diverse range of areas including new product development and design control, but also risk management, equipment design & validation, clinical writing and post market surveillance. More recently he achieved a Certificate in Company Direction (Dist) from the IoD and in his current role leads a high-performing team of researchers, engineers, scientists and project managers who have successfully designed and launched 10+ market-leading intraocular lenses since 2016 (including the Rayner RayOne, Trifocal and EMV families).
Nat’s current focus is building on Rayner’s reputation as an innovation leader in premium intraocular lenses and delivery systems, to expand the company research & product development program into new and exciting areas of ophthalmology.
Alongside looking after his two young children, Nat’s interests away from work include football, bouldering and custom PC building!
Claire Rendell
HR Director
Claire holds a strong and varied HR generalist and organisation development background gained in aerospace, manufacturing and medical device sectors. Claire has driven high performance work cultures in fast growth, highly commercial businesses scaled by M & A with the addition of setting up legal entities and the subsequent people requirements in new markets. In addition, she has led successful post-merger integrations with a strong focus on talent management and value creation through people.
Claire joined Rayner in December 2020 from Acro Aircraft Seating where she held a key role on the executive leadership team. Claire gained international HR and medical device/pharmaceutical industry experience at CR Bard (now Becton Dickinson) where she held a number of regional HR Director roles across E/EMEA. Since joining Rayner, Claire has been promoted to VP Global HR and has played a critical role in embedding Rayners ‘values driven’ culture across the organization enabling teams to have a strong sense of purpose and direction to deliver business goals collaboratively. Claire is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and in her spare time enjoys long walks in the countryside with her dog.
Alan Hemmant
General Counsel
Alan started at Rayner in December 2015, joining as a senior legal counsel with a combination of both private practice and in-house experience. Alan is dual-qualified as a solicitor and trade mark attorney, and is an associate member of the Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland.
Whilst in private practice, Alan gained significant experience as an associate solicitor in corporate, compliance, commercial and intellectual property matters at a major regional law firm, representing clients across a number of industries. Alan’s in-house experience prior to joining Rayner was as legal counsel at a research-intensive university, advising on a broad range of commercial/IP arrangements including industry collaborations, clinical trials, IP licensing, consortium and investment agreements. Since Alan joined Rayner, the business has grown at an incredible pace – during this time Alan has overseen the M&A activity of the group, as well as managing the expanding legal operations required of a high-growth business.
Whilst away from work, Alan enjoys keeping active with his young family, spending time in the gym and exploring the South Downs.
